How to Remove a White Water Ring From a Wood Table
A white ring on a wood table usually looks worse than it is. White or cloudy means the moisture is trapped in the finish rather than the wood, and that is often reversible. Start with the gentlest fix and stop the moment it works.
What you will need
Patience, a hair dryer and a soft, dry cloth.
1. Blot it dry and wait
Blot any remaining moisture and give the finish a day or two. A pale ring often fades on its own as the finish dries out.
2. Still there? Add gentle warmth
Hold a hair dryer on its low setting a few inches from the ring and keep it moving the whole time. Never let it sit in one spot.
3. Stop as soon as it clears
When the ring fades, stop, let the surface cool, and buff with a soft, dry cloth, moving with the grain.
A dark ring is different
A dark ring means the water reached the wood itself. Heat will not fix it, and scrubbing will make it worse. A professional finisher should handle it.
The easier fix
Coasters under every glass, and blotting spills the moment they happen, prevent nearly all of it. See caring for wood furniture for the full routine.
