How to Clean a Spill on a Fabric Sofa

A spill on a fabric sofa is a race, and blotting wins it. A liquid that has not soaked into the cushion lifts away with very little effort, so the first minute matters more than any product. Here is the method, in order.

What you will need

A few clean, dry, light-colored cloths, distilled water, a small amount of mild soap, and a fan.

1. Read the cleaning code

Find the tag under a seat cushion. W means water-based cleaning is safe, S means solvent only, WS means either, and X means vacuum only. The code decides every step after this one. Our guide to upholstery cleaning codes covers each letter.

2. Test on a hidden spot

Try whatever you plan to use on the back corner or underside of a cushion, then wait a few minutes to make sure the color holds.

3. Blot from the outside in

Press a clean, dry cloth straight down onto the spill to draw the liquid up, then lift and repeat with a fresh section. Start at the outer edge and work toward the center so the mark gets smaller rather than wider. Never rub.

4. For W and WS fabrics, a damp cloth and mild soap

Mix a little mild soap into distilled water and apply it with a damp cloth. Never pour liquid onto the cushion. Moisture that reaches the foam lingers and can leave an odor or a ring.

5. Let it dry completely

Set a fan nearby and keep everyone off the cushion until it is fully dry. Sitting on a damp cushion presses moisture back into the fill.

When to stop and call a professional

Stop for X-coded fabrics, set-in stains, delicate natural fibers, and any spot you are unsure about. A professional upholstery cleaner can treat them without setting the stain for good.
