What a Sidemark Is and How to Use One

A sidemark is a short label a designer assigns to a shipment so the receiver knows exactly whose project it belongs to and where it goes. It is the single most important detail on a purchase order, because it is what keeps a whole-home order organized instead of scattered across a warehouse.

What a sidemark looks like

A good sidemark identifies the project and, usually, the room or the client. Common formats include the client’s last name plus the room, or a project name plus a job number. The exact convention matters less than using it consistently across every vendor and every purchase order for the same project.

For example, a designer might sidemark every piece for one job as Harrison – Living Room or Cedar Creek 204. When ten shipments arrive from eight vendors over three months, that shared label is what lets the receiver stage them together.

Where the sidemark goes

The sidemark belongs in two places: on the purchase order you send the vendor, and in the ship-to instructions so it prints on the packing list and the carton labels. When it is on the box, the receiving crew can tag and route a piece at the dock, without guessing or calling around.

Why it protects your project

• Organization. Pieces are grouped by project, so nothing gets lost among unrelated inventory.
• Accurate notifications. When a shipment is received, the arrival notice references your sidemark, so you know exactly which project just advanced.
• Clean install days. A complete, correctly labeled order can be pulled and loaded as one project rather than reassembled piece by piece.
• Confidentiality. Your sidemark is private to your account. What moves through the warehouse is nobody’s business but yours.
